CLUE initiates, carries out and coordinates research into the historical development, the heritage and current transformation of the cultural landscape and urban space in a European perspective.

This is why most research projects of CLUE comprise international comparisons. The emphasis here is especially on the historical backgrounds of current spatial issues, such as the rapid urbanisation of European regions and the problem of water management. But what is also studied is the way in which social changes such as globalisation affect our interaction with cultural heritage, for instance where international heritage tourism is concerned. Research by CLUE in the Netherlands is aimed at the history of specific buildings, cities, landscapes and regions, the cultural and economic value of heritage, the modernisation of heritage legislation and the incorporation of heritage in spatial developments.

The SPINlab is involved in the research programme of CLUE in various ways, the most important contribution being the design and implementation of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for cultural heritage monitoring and research.
