Green Heart - open spaceIn the metropolitan landscape, the complexity and dynamics of societal developments no longer allow the classical role of the government and its policy instruments to be effective. Dutch spatial planning needs to critically analyse the driving forces in the metropolitan landscape and why classical spatial planning is not effective anymore, in order to define new adequate ways of co-ordinating spatial developments.

Open space preservation is a topic of on-going research at our research group. The relation between urban and non-urban (i.e. open) land use receives ample attention in our land-use modelling efforts and land-use planning analyses.

The past years, we cooperated in the NWO-sponsored research programme Reinventing Landscape Planning in MetroLand. In this programme, the application of ‘grounded theory’ methodology and the installation of a user group facilitate closely connected empirical and theoretical analyses in order to find ways to make landscape planning more effective, with specific reference to the actual value of open space and how this value can be internalised in the Dutch planning system. This programme started in September 2004 and finished in September 2008.
